Legal Obligations

Employers must provide medical surveillance in Loughborough for employees exposed to asbestos fibres above the control limit, in line with The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

Even former workers can benefit from regular medicals to track long-term lung health.

What Does an Asbestos Medical Involve?

Each asbestos medical includes:

  • An occupational health questionnaire

  • Lung function testing (spirometry)

  • A respiratory system examination

  • A review of asbestos-related symptoms

If needed, we may recommend a chest X-ray or other diagnostic tests.
Results show whether there are early signs of asbestos-related illness and guide any further medical or workplace action.

Is an Asbestos Medical a Legal Requirement in Loughborough?

Yes. Under The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, anyone exposed above the control limit must undergo regular medical surveillance.

Employers in Loughborough are responsible for ensuring full compliance with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) rules.

⚠️ Non-compliance can lead to penalties, safety violations, and higher liability for asbestos-related claims.

What Happens If Health Issues Are Found?

If we detect respiratory changes or signs of disease, we’ll refer the individual for:

  • Chest X-rays or CT scans

  • Specialist lung assessments

Early action helps manage symptoms and slow disease progression.
Employers may need to adjust work duties, improve safety measures, or review exposure levels.

Monitoring Past Asbestos Exposure

Even if you no longer work with asbestos, regular medicals can track delayed-onset diseases such as:

  • Asbestosis

  • Lung Cancer

  • Mesothelioma

Since these conditions can appear decades later, ongoing health monitoring is highly recommended.
