Tetanus is a serious disease caused by a toxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium tetani. It affects the nervous system. It can affect your ability to breathe and can be life threatening.  Tetanus bacteria are commonly found in soil and in the manure of animals. Bacteria can enter your body through open wounds. Once inside they release the toxin which affects nerves causing the symptoms of muscle spasms and stiffness. The bacteria can enter your body through the following ways:
