Treadmill Test (Exercise ECG Tolerance Test) – Just Health

Exercise ECG / Exercise Tolerance Test ETT / Exercise Stress Test £350

An exercise ECG, also called an Exercise Tolerance Test Or Exercise Stress Test is an electrocardiogram (ECG) that is recorded while you are walking on a treadmill or cycling on an exercise bike. The aim of the test is to see how your heart works when you are exerting yourself.

What can an exercise ECG show?

The exercise ECG helps doctors find out if you have coronary heart disease, as it shows whether your heart muscle is getting enough blood from the coronary arteries during physical activity. It can also show if you have been having symptoms of angina as any areas where there is a lack of oxygen to the heart is reflected on the ECG tracing.

Some people are asked to have an ECG after procedures, such as coronary angioplasty or for a Sports event such as a Motorsport Competition License (MSA Medical), Marathon or DVLA Medical for Class 1 Drivers HGV LGV . What is an Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT) / Exercise ECG?

An exercise tolerance test — sometimes called a treadmill test or stress test — is a safe, non‑invasive assessment of how your heart and lungs respond to physical exertion. During the test you’ll walk on a treadmill while we monitor your heart rhythm, blood pressure and possibly breathing. This helps us assess your cardiovascular fitness, detect potential issues and certify you for driver medicals or occupational health clearance.

How Often Should You Have a Treadmill Test / Exercise ECG?

The frequency of treadmill (exercise tolerance) testing depends on your health status and occupational requirements:

**For professional drivers or safety‑critical workers:** many regulatory bodies recommend an ETT every **3 years**, or sooner if you develop new symptoms or risk factors.

-**For those with known heart conditions:** your doctor may advise repeat testing every **1 to 2 years** to monitor changes.

**For routine health checks (especially over‑50s):** every **3 to 5 years** can help track cardiovascular fitness.

At Just Health, we’ll advise the ideal interval based on your results, occupation, and personal health profile.

You may be recommended a treadmill test if you:

Are over 50 years old and require an occupational or driver’s medical.

Need cardiovascular fitness certification for your job.

Want to assess your heart’s response prior to major surgery or high‑intensity exercise.

2. You’ll start walking on the treadmill. Every 2‑3 minutes the speed and incline will increase.

3. We monitor your heart rhythm, blood pressure and symptoms.

4. The test continues until you reach target exertion, develop symptoms, or the clinician decides to stop. A minimum of 9 minutes is require dto meet the Bruce Protcol Standard
